Day 4 of the drive home, day 21 of the trip.
I woke up early, and explored downtown Fort Scott on foot on my way to breakfast.
It’s a feast for the eyes!
Many of the buildings have been nicely restored.
I ate at Common Ground Coffee, and had half of my “Scromburrito” and a Cappucino.
Left town around 9:30, the horizon went on for miles.
This amused me:
Sorry that this next one is out of focus.
The plate I spied in Wichita was seriously freaking me out.
The landscape got interesting west of Medicine Lodge - mesas!
Then I encountered a large convoy of trucks.
US 54/160 is a 2-lane highway and passing truck by truck was nerve wracking. If I saw a truck passing up ahead, they were obviously blocking any potential oncoming traffic, and that was my cue to make a move. I was relieved when the two highways split in Plains and most of the trucks went the other route.
I soon passed into Oklahoma, and the town of Hooker provided me with more amusement:
I arrived in Dalhart at 7pm.
And dined on Trader Joe’s items.
Day 21 complete, 508 miles, 9.5 hours.
Those restored buildings really are beautiful. In the town I live in, they just knock them down and build something new (and ugly). My hometown restored many buildings. Man, they missed many opportunities to advertise Hooker! And, passing any big trucks makes me worry they might not see me! At least you had that little signal telling you when you could pass.
