Left LA at about 7:30am! Determined to get to Weed in daylight!
(I vividly remember the time I was driving up there in the dark. The shoulders’ rumble strips saved my life, as I was nodding off. Hence the daylight concern).
Had to get gas at Costco because they were closed on Memorial Day [previous day]. Bad traffic getting to the freeway up Lincoln (bad choice). Once I got on the 405 it was easy breezy.
The 5 was its usual sunny, flat, boring self. The trucks weren’t too bad.
And, finally, into the mountains:
I got to Weed at 5:45.
Room X at the Hi-Lo Motel was on the lowest level, across from the motor home camping. With a fridge and microwave! Yay!
Dinner was Chili and Sweet Potato Fries at the Hi-Lo Cafe. Yum
There aren’t great views of Shasta from the rooms (at least from the rooms I’ve stayed in - too much foliage). You have to stand near the back staff entrance to the Cafe (or go up to the neighboring gas station) to get a photo op. Or take a walk in downtown Weed.
Day 1 complete. 611 miles
Every week, I’ll go into detail about each day of my recent road trip [except some of the 8 days in upstate NY].
While you wait for next week’s Day 2 installment - Weed, CA to Hope, BC - get previews on FindPenguins.
